Golden Eagles Blank Cal State Stanislaus

TURLOCK – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team kept its winning streak going with another clutch victory on the road Friday.

The Golden Eagles got two second-half goals from John Massaquoi and six saves from Tobias Hummel and blanked Cal State Stanislaus, 2-0, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Warrior Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (8-2-2, 6-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and grabbed the lead in the CCAA South Division. The Golden Eagles, who are unbeaten in their last seven matches, have won three consecutive conference contests on the road.

Massaquoi scored his two goals in a nine-minute span to lift the Golden Eagles to the victory. The game was scoreless at halftime and well into the second half.

The first goal by Massaquoi came with an assist from Cal State L.A.'s leading scorer, Morten Marthinsen. Massaquoi took a pass from Marthinsen and redirected it while it was still in the air and lofted just past the reach of Cal State Stanislaus goalie Mando Herrera for the score.

He got his second goal less than 10 minutes later after taking a pass from Spencer Tripp and rifling a shot from just inside the center circle and under the crossbar to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 edge with just 2:54 remaining in the match. Massaquoi now has six goals on the season, which is second on the team. Marthinsen leads with eight goals and 20 total points.

Both teams were credited with 19 shots and both teams picked up 12 fouls. Hummel made six saves to post his fifth shutout of the season. Herrera made four saves for the Warriors (2-7-3, 1-5-2 CCAA).

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road match at Chico State on Sunday.
