Golden Eagles Drop Overtime Heartbreaker To Broncos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had its chances, but Cal Poly Pomona got the only one that found its way into the goal.

The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 23-14 advantage in shots, but Cal Poly Pomona got the only goal of the game 5:52 into overtime to post a 1-0 win Friday night at Jesse Owens Track.

Britany Garrett did the scoring honors, knocking home a long, high kick from Stephanie Mrazik that attracted a crowd in front of the Cal State L.A. net. The ball landed and Garrett was the first to get to it on the left side of the penalty box. She quickly kicked the ball into the right corner of the goal to end the game.

Cal Poly Pomona (6-1, 3-1 CCAA) remains tied with UC San Diego atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division, while Cal State L.A. (4-2, 1-2 CCAA) lost for the second time in three conference games despite outshooting all three opponents.

It was an entertaining and well-played game between two of the top contenders in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona goalie Amanda Cunningham had a spectacular game for the Broncos and made 11 saves. Vanessa Suarez was impressive in goal as well for the Golden Eagles and made five saves.

Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 23-14 edge in shots, including a 16-7 advantage in the first half.

Both teams had outstanding chances in regulation. Khadijah Greenwood had a pair of opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game and Cal Poly Pomona's Lindsey Zuber had a header that Suarez made a nice save to keep out of the net.

Suarez made another save on a strong bid by Mrazik and Greenwood had a shot roll across the goalmouth late in the first half for Cal State L.A. that went wide.

Andrea Salerno sent a hard shot just wide to open the second half for Cal Poly Pomona and Liz Franco pounced on a failed clearing attempt for Cal State L.A. at the top of the box and sent a shot just wide of the goal.

Cal State L.A.'s Erica Prado had the best chance in regulation, but her kick clanked off the left post. Christine Buenrostro got to the rebound first, but her shot attempt was blocked by the Bronco defense.

Salerno sent in a cross later in the half and Zuber's head shot got past Suarez, but stopped short of the goal. That same Cal Poly Pomona duo struck again moments later, but Suarez made the save.

Cal State L.A. also had a late bid, but a corner kick by Prado was headed by Jennifer Schafer and went just wide.

Mrazik had a shot late in regulation from about 25 yards out that just went over the crossbar and the teams went into the extra frame.

Mrazik again sent in a long, high shot and the end result was Garrett's game-winning goal.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
