Golden Eagles Post Overtime Win Over Broncos

POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team kept its conference tournament hopes alive with a dramatic win Friday over a local rival.

Sarah Le scored in overtime to lift the Golden Eagles to an important 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday at Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (9-5-1, 6-4-1) won for the third time in its last four games and pulled ahead of Cal Poly Pomona (9-6, 6-6) for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division. The Golden Eagles have the fifth-highest point total in the conference and pulled to within four points of Cal State Stanislaus, which currently has the fourth-highest total in the conference. Cal State L.A. has three conference games remaining, while both Cal State Stanislaus and Cal Poly Pomona have two remaining.

The four teams with the highest point totals advance to the conference tournament.

Cal State L.A., which needed a victory to pass Cal Poly Pomona, got it in extra time on Friday. Both games between the two squads went into overtime – the Broncos edged the Golden Eagles in Los Angeles, 1-0, on Sept. 14.

The Golden Eagles held an 18-12 advantage in shots. Reyna Coca made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Amanda Cunningham had seven saves for Cal Poly Pomona.

The Broncos scored first in the 29th minute and held that lead into halftime. Andrea Salerno scored off a deflection inside the box. Jennifer Lu and Britany Garrett had assists for the Broncos.

Cal State L.A.s' Dana Menard was fouled in the penalty box in the 68th minute and Amber de Seriere knocked in the penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.

That's how it stayed until Le's game-winning goal – her first of the season. She got an assist from Liz Franco on the goal, which came from inside the box.
Menard had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Erika Prado had three.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
