A talented assistant coach with both NCAA Division I and professional basketball levels, Shawn Berina returns for her second season with the Cal State L.A. women’s basketball program as an assistant coach. She is responsible for the development of wings and posts, team equipment, travel, marketing and fundraising as well as on-court duties.
Berina helped the Golden Eagles post an 11-15 overall record and a 10-12 conference mark despite having a short-handed roster of just 11 players that included only two seniors.
Berina spent the 2013-14 season as an intern with Stanford’s women’s basketball program during which the Cardinal advanced to the Division I Final Four. She assisted with film exchange, video editing, recruiting, basketball operations, marketing and game presentation, and other requested special projects.
She also spent two years as a statistics analyst with the Los Angeles Clippers while serving as the junior varsity and frosh/soph head coach and varsity assistant coach for the girls basketball program at Bishop Alemany High School. She helped guide the Warriors to the 2013 CIF Southern Section Division III State Championship. Prior to that, she was an intern with the Clippers’ fan relations department.
Berina began her collegiate playing career at the U.S Air Force Academy in 2006. At Air Force, she earned Top Academic and Military Ropes along with the Vice Commanders Rope for outstanding performance in both areas. She finished in the top-3 in her class with a 3.89 grade point average and was nominated for Top Cadet in Athletics and Top Cadet Overall.
Berina graduated from the University of Southern California in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Global Business. She also works for On Board Experimental Marketing, where she handles social media and customer service for Run Nike Women Series events.
