A talented coach with impressive credentials, Ronnie Barney returns for a second season with the Cal State LA women’s basketball program and has been promoted to associate head coach.
Barney played a big role in helping Cal State LA to a 15-14 overall record in 2016-17 and the program’s first winning season since 2014. The Golden Eagles finished with a 12-8 record in conference play and qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles were also a program-best 10-1 at home last season.
Barney comes to Cal State LA from Langston University, where he spent two successful seasons with the NAIA program. In his two years with the program, Barney helped Langston to a 48-12 overall record and back-to-back NAIA Division I National Tournament appearances. The Lions also won the Red River Athletic Conference tournament title during the 2014-15 season. Langston had a 28-4 overall record that season.
Before coaching at Langston, Barney was the Director of Basketball Operations at Louisiana Tech University. His responsibilities included administrative duties in the basketball office, practice scheduling, and supervising team managers.
He also managed the team’s social media and team travel. Barney was part of a program that reached the Conference USA quarterfinals.
Barney brings an impressive coaching background and strong player development skills to Cal State LA. He has experience not only at the collegiate level, but also at high school and in the AAU circuit. Barney was an integral part of the Sophia Young Elite AAU program sponsored by WNBA All-Star Sophia Young. Barney spent the majority of two years as an assistant coach before taking over as the director and head coach during the 2012 and 2013 summer seasons.
Barney earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, in 2008. He was a four-year letter winner for the men’s basketball program.
