Derrick Florence

A talented coach with a sound 10 years of coaching experience, Derrick Florence joins the Cal State L.A. women’s basketball program as an assistant coach. He has vast experience coaching high school and club teams and has been an instructor at various elite camps.

Most recently Florence was the head coach at Compton Centennial High School. Since 2007, he dramatically increased Centennial girls’ varsity basketball program’s overall winning percentage, academic grade point averages and the number of girls both applying and entering college.

This past summer, Florence was the head coach of the Cal Sparks Team Black, a girls’ Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball organization. He was also an instructor at the University of California Berkeley’s elite basketball camp.

Florence founded the Changing Perceptions Together basketball organizations (C.P.T), which is a youth basketball organization targeted at inner city, underprivileged girls, particularly within the Compton Unified School District area.

Florence earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morehouse College and earned his Master’s degree in education policy and management from Harvard.
