ARCATA, Calif. — Jose Mariscal scored twice in the opening 23 minutes and No.1 ranked Cal State LA Golden Eagles remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday at College Creek Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 9-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play. Cal Poly Humboldt fell to 2-6-3 overall and 1-4 in conference action. Cal State LA recorded its eighth shutout of the season and has out-scored opponents 20-2.
Mariscal put Cal State LA ahead in the seventh minute, finishing an opportunity created by Angel Sandres and Felix Alverdale. He doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute with an unassisted goal.
The brace highlighted a seven-shot performance by Mariscal, who placed three attempts on goal.
Cal Poly Humboldt produced its best chances midway through the opening half, but Cal State LA goalkeeper Abraham Ramirez stopped consecutive shots from Luke Gomes in the 14th and 17th minutes.
The Golden Eagles carried their 2-0 lead into halftime and controlled the second half, out-shooting Humboldt, 11-1, and earning six corner kicks.
Jose Lopez completed the scoring in the 74th minute. Sandres supplied the assist for his second helper of the match, giving Cal State LA a 3-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles finished with advantages of 20-6 in shots, 6-2 in shots on goal and 7-2 in corner kicks. Cal State LA's defense did not allow a shot on goal during the second half.
Ramirez made two saves to earn the shutout. Benjamin McDonald recorded three saves for Cal Poly Humboldt.
