Golden Eagles make it four straight with 2-1 win at Menlo

ATHERTON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made it four wins in a row Thursday, getting second-half goals from Itzel Carbajal and Briana Chagolla to defeat Menlo, 2-1, at Wunderlich Field.

The Golden Eagles (8-2-4) broke a scoreless tie early in the second half, built a two-goal advantage and held off a late push by the Oaks to extend their winning streak.

Carbajal opened the scoring at 48:36, taking a pass from Alina Valdez at the top of the box and finishing into the upper-left corner for a 1-0 lead.

Chagolla delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal at 78:05. After her initial shot hit the left post, she collected her own rebound and scored into the upper-right corner to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 cushion.

Menlo answered just 12 seconds later when Hailey Stevanus volleyed in a free kick from Isabel Amador at the back post, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Cal State LA goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin helped protect the lead with two saves down the stretch. She stopped Avery Grieve's shot at 79:19 and turned away an attempt by Aubrey Dollins at 85:23 as the Golden Eagles closed out their fourth consecutive victory.

Sumlin finished with four saves, while Menlo goalkeeper Caroline Cordes made seven.

Cal State LA controlled much of the first-half attack, holding a 7-4 advantage in shots and earning all six corner kicks of the period. Cordes made four saves before halftime to keep the match scoreless.

The Golden Eagles increased the pressure after the break, recording 12 second-half shots and finding the net twice. They finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Chagolla led Cal State LA with six shots, including three on goal. Carbajal added three shots, two on target, while Bailey Martinez and Kristin Mijares each had two attempts.

Menlo fell to 3-9-2.
