LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA has matched its highest finish ever after placing third in the 2024-25 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup standings, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Cal Poly Pomona won the cup with 96.53 points to receive the honor as the conference's top overall athletic department for 2024-25. Chico State, which won the Hiegert Cup in 2023-24, finished second with 92.08 points. Cal State LA was third with 74.52 points with Cal State East Bay (70.28 points) and Stanislaus State (67.37 points) rounding out the top five.
Cal State LA, which was the only program to qualify for each CCAA Tournament (excluding softball), finished third in the standings for the first time since 2012-13. The Golden Eagles were also third in 2011-12 and 2007-08.
The 74.52 points are the second-best total for the Golden Eagles since the current point system was initiated in the 2016-17 academic year. Cal State LA had a record 81.70 points in 2023-24 while finishing fourth. The Golden Eagles went on to claim the conference's first-ever President's Cup later that year, which awards the program with the most points in the Learfield Director's Cup standings for national finishes.
Cal State LA now has three top-four finishes in the past four years.
The award, named in honor of former long-time commissioner and Hall of Famer Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate total in eight of the 13 championship sports.
An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, as well as the next two highest finishes, regardless of the season. The specific number of points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions that sponsor the sport.
Cal State LA had a strong conference performance across the board, led by a second-place finish by golf, third-place finishes from men's and women's soccer, fourth-place finishes for volleyball and baseball, fifth-place finishes for women's track and women's basketball and a sixth-place finish for men's basketball.
