Golden Eagles Get Off To A Championship Start

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams saw a championship start for the Golden Eagles on the opening day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships Thursday.

Jonon Young successfully defended her conference long jump title and Vanessa Portillo scored points in the hammer throw to highlight the opening day for Cal State LA at Stanislaus State's Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.

Young recorded a season's best effort of 20-10 to win the long jump by more than one foot. She now has the No. 2 mark in the nation pending other results later on Thursday. Her previous best this season was 20-6.25, which was tied for fifth in the nation.

She opened with a jump of 20-2.50 to take the lead and she got her best mark on her sixth and final attempt.

Portillo, who was 11th in the conference in the hammer throw last season, moved up nicely to fifth place on Thursday. She had her best mark of  148-0 on her fifth of six attempts. 

Cahari Allen was 11th in the long jump for Cal State LA's men's team on Thursday.

Drew Hill had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 meter prelims with a mark of 10.37, while Jahbari Fraser was fifth with a time of 10.61. Cal State LA also had two qualifiers in the 400 hurdles with Ike Aninze third at 53.32 and Gabriel Pearson eighth at 55.68.

Cal State LA's women's team also had a pair of qualifiers in the 400 hurdles with Dalia Romo fourth in 64.14 and Paula Romo eighth in 67.04.

The three-day championship meet will continue on Friday.
