Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles End Regular Season With A Narrow Loss

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team saw a late comeback bid fall just short in an 89-87 California Collegiate Athletic Association setback to San Francisco State on Saturday that concluded the regular season.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half, yet closed to within two points with six seconds to go before ultimately falling to the Gators in Main Gym. Cal State LA (12-16, 10-12 CCAA) had wrapped up the No. 6 seed for the CCAA Tournament with Thursday's win over Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles will face No. 3 seed Cal State San Bernardino in a rematch of last year's CCAA Tournament championship game in a first-round contest on Thursday at Cal State San Marcos.

Cal State LA prevailed in that matchup in San Bernardino to claim the program's first-ever CCAA Tournament title.

Corey Cofield II had another outstanding game on Saturday, scoring a game-high 27 points to go along with eight rebounds. He has now scored 20 or more points in six straight games and seven of his last eight.

Shane Bell also had a big game for the Golden Eagles with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Tyjean Burrell had 19 points for San Francisco State (11-17, 9-13 CCAA) to lead five Gators in double figures.

Raphael Gay had 10 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jaden Lazo had nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.

Cal State LA shot 54.4 percent for the game (31-of-57), including a sensational 70 percent in the second half (21-of-30). The Golden Eagles were 9-of-16 from 3-point range, including 7-of-9 in the second half. Cal State LA was 16-of-22 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) and was 14-of-24 from 3-point range. The Gators were 21-of-34 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 37-31 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 11 for the Gators.

The Golden Eagles allowed the first eight points of the game and trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before a late layup by Bell made it 42-28 at halftime.

Cal State LA then fell behind by 15 points before staging its latest second-half comeback. A 3-pointer by Lazo sliced the deficit to 50-47 with 15 minutes to go and a 3-pointer by Cofield II made it 52-50 with 13:40 left.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 13 points with eight minutes remaining, 69-56, but went on a quick 9-1 run to get to within 70-65 after a 3-pointer by Lazo with five minutes to go.

The Golden Eagles still trailed by eight points, 84-76, with 51 seconds left, but four straight points by Bell and a free throw by Chasen Stewart made it 84-81 with 37 seconds remaining. A 3-pointer by Bell made it 88-86 with six seconds to go and, after a free throw made it 89-86, the Gators were called for an intentional foul with one second left. Bell made one free throw to cut the margin to two points and the Golden Eagles maintained possession, but couldn't get off a desperation 3-pointer to win it before time expired.

Cal State LA will now turn its full attention to defending the CCAA Tournament title beginning on Thursday.
