Escobar Hits 1,000 In Big Golden Eagles Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team celebrated another career milestone on Saturday as well as an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Stanislaus State.

Dominic Escobar reached 1,000 career points with some clutch free throws down the stretch as the Golden Eagles edged the Warriors, 83-79, in a hard-fought game in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (11-13, 9-9 CCAA) remains in a tie for fifth place with Cal Poly Pomona..

The Golden Eagles stretched their winning streak to three and pulled to within one game of fourth-place Cal Poly Humboldt and one game ahead of seventh-place Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State with four regular-season games remaining.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament, which was won last year by Cal State LA for the first time in program history.

Escobar became the second player to crack 1,000 points for the Golden Eagles, joining Shane Bell, who achieved the milestone in a game at Chico State last month. He hit two free throws with 26 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles an 81-77 lead and he boosted his total to 1,002 with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining that provided the finishing touches on a big come-from-behind win.

Escobar joined the program in 2021-22 and made an immediate impact, appearing in 16 games with 13 starts and ranking fifth on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game.

He earned All-CCAA honorable mention as a sophomore, averaging 12.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while appearing in 22 games with 12 starts.
