No. 1 Golden Eagles Finish Tourney With 2-2 Mark

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball had to settle for a four-match split at the season-opening Yotes Classic Showcase.

The No. 1-ranked Golden Eagles, the defending national champions, fell to No. 10 St. Cloud State in four sets on Saturday to complete tournament play. Cal State LA (2-2) started slowly, got back into the match with an inspiring second-set comeback and then battled to the end before the Huskies prevailed, 25-15, 21-25, 25-11, 25-20. St. Cloud State (3-1) won its final three matches of the tourney after dropping its opener to Cal Poly Pomona.

Emily Elliott overcame a tough start and finished with a match-high 21 kills and nine digs. Samarah DaCoud had five kills, two blocks and seven digs.

Kenzie Foley had 16 kills and four blocks to lead St. Cloud State. Ella Thompson had 11 kills and Hannah Bruskiewicz had 10 kills for the Huskies.

Ashlyn Beaver had 15 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Arielle Chandler had 11 assists and a service ace.

The match featured the 2023 National Player of the Year (Foley) and the 2023 NCAA Championships Most Valuable Player (Elliott).

St. Cloud State had a 51-36 edge in kills and a 9-6 advantage in blocks. The Huskies hit at a .302 percentage to just .110 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had difficulties again from the service line, hitting just two aces to 10 errors, while St. Cloud State had nine aces and nine errors.

After dropping the opening set, the Golden Eagles showed some resiliency while battling back from deficits of 8-2 and 11-5 in the second frame. Cal State LA responded with a 4-0 run to get back in it thanks in part to a block from Elliott and Rachel Lowe, a service ace from Chandler and a block by Zuhal Cetin.

After falling behind 16-10, the Golden Eagles surged to take a 20-17 lead sparked by two kills each by Elliott and Haley Roundtree and a kill by DaCoud. The Huskies then scored the next three points to tie it, but back-to-back kills by Elliott put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. A service ace by Matalasi Danielson closed out the set for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA struggled in the third set, but had chances in the fourth set to even the match. The Golden Eagles held a 15-14 lead, only to see the Huskies fight back. Kills by Elliott tied it at 16-16 and 17-17, but St. Cloud State took a 19-17 lead and never trailed again.

Elliott was named to the 10-player All-Tournament Team after the tourney concluded Saturday night.

Cal State LA will return to action in the Central Washington Invitational with matches against Simon Fraser, Western Washington and Central Washington beginning on Thursday,
