Golden Eagles Make A Move With Big Win At Home

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team returned home from a two-week, four-game road trip and turned in a winning performance Thursday night in University Gym.

On a night where Cal State LA's national champion volleyball team was honored at halftime, the basketball team came out strong and never looked back in an 88-42 victory over San Francisco State. The Golden Eagles (11-10, 8-8 CCAA) had a 43-26 lead at halftime and then outscored the Gators (5-16, 4-12 CCAA), 45-16, in the second half.

With the win, the Golden Eagles moved into a five-way tie for fourth place in a tightly-bunched conference race and are now just two games out of third. The top six teams will qualify for the conference tournament and there are six games remaining.

Lily Buggs had an outstanding performance to lead the way, pouring in a game-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She also had five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal.

Olivia Hodges was also outstanding, scoring 13 points and matching a career-high with 13 rebounds. She recorded her first double-double of the season. Ashley Orozco also reached double figures with 10 points.

Nyana Asiasi had a team-high 12 points for the Gators.

Alicia Jones had eight points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nevaeh Asiasi had eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Nicole Flennaugh had seven points and added to her conference and program record with another 3-pointer and Donja Payne had seven points and four rebounds.

Amaya Fuentes set a new career high with 10 rebounds to go along with five points and Gabriella Fones had six points with a pair of 3-pointers.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (36-of-72) and was 6-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) and was 5-of-26 from 3-point range. The Gators were just 3-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a big advantage on the boards and out-rebounded the Gators, 55-22. The Golden Eagles had 13 turnovers to 17 for the Gators.

The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points of the game with Flennaugh opening with a jumper, Buggs scoring a pair of baskets and Jones adding one. San Francisco State was able to cut the margin to three points, but the Golden Eagles got a free throw from Hodges, a layup by Hodges with an assist from Sofia Fidelus and a basket from Hodges with an assist from Asiasi to take a 21-13 lead after one period.

San Francisco State cut the margin to five points at 25-20, but the Golden Eagles scored the next 13 points, beginning with a 3-pointer from Rones. The run continued with a free throw by Payne, a layup by Buggs, a layup by Payne, a three-point play by Payne and a pair of free throws by Hodges to open up a 38-20 advantage. A jumper by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 43-26 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 39 points in the third quarter, 69-30, after a layup by Asiasi and led by as many as 49 points in the final period.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a home game against Cal State East Bay,
