Morgan Sjoerdsma Named CCAA Golfer Of The Week

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's Morgan Sjoerdsma picked up this week's California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Golfer of the Week award after winning the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on Tuesday.

Sjoerdsma won individual medalist honors after leading throughout the tournament, held at Corica Park in Alameda. She finished at five-under-par 139 in the 36-hole event, three strokes ahead of runner-up Zoe Offield of Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles' strong showing in the tournament resulted in a big move in the national rankings. Cal State LA is now ranked No. 24, which marks the first time in program history the Golden Eagles have been ranked inside the top-25.

Sjoerdsma, who now has three consecutive top-five finishes, opened with a tournament low of 68 on Monday with six birdies, including four on her final nine holes. On Tuesday, the 2022 CCAA individual champion got as low as 8-under-par and shot a 71 to complete the outing atop of leaderboard. In all, Sjoerdsma had 12 birdies and 18 pars.

Her 139 is a new program record.

Cal State LA finished second in the tournament, one shot behind host Cal State East Bay. The tournament win was the third of Sjoerdsma's career and her first since the Sonoma State Fall Invitational in 2022. She also won the CCAA Championship in spring of 2022.

This is Sjoerdsma's second career CCAA Golfer of the Week award. She won this honor on Oct. 5, 2022 after winning the Sonoma State Fall Invitational.

Cal State LA will return to action on Monday, March 11 at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational.
