Golden Eagles Fall Short At Dominguez Hills

CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was in striking distance to the end, but came up short Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within four points with one minute to go, but the Toros scored the final four points to earn a 75-67 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in the Torodome. Cal State LA (4-6, 2-2 CCAA) dropped both games to Cal State Dominguez Hills this season, after going 3-0 against the Toros last season on the way to a CCAA Tournament title.

Corey Cofield II had 21 points and four rebounds to lead Cal State LA, while Shane Bell had 11 points. Raphael Gay had 10 points and five rebounds.

Jeremy Dent-Smith had a game-high 25 points for the Toros (8-3, 4-0 CCAA), while Alex Garcia had 16 points and Adam Afifi had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Devin Ringer had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while Jaden Lazo had six points.

Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent for the game (25-of-58) and was 7-of-25 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and was 6-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-11 from the free-throw line with Cofield II getting all 11 attempts, while the Toros were 15-of-20. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 41-26 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 16 turnovers and committed 14.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as seven points early, but a pair of free throws by Cofield II and five consecutive points from Kyjuan Cannady tied it at 16-16. The Toros scored the next seven points, but a 3-pointer by Lazo and baskets by Bell and Gay tied it again. A tip-in by Gay at the end of the half got the Golden Eagles within one point at 29-28.

Cal State LA took a 32-29 lead after back-to-back layups by Gay to open the second half and a 3-pointer and 1-of-2 free throws by Cofield II pushed the Golden Eagles to a 37-35 lead and a short jumper in the lane by Robin Kniss gave the Golden Eagles a 39-37 advantage. The Toros, though, scored the next seven points and never trailed again.

The Golden Eagles fell down by as many as 14 points later in the half, but a 3-pointer by Ringer sliced the deficit to 71-67 with 1:09 to go before the Toros scored the final four points of the game to secure the win.

Cal State LA will now enjoy the holidays and return to competition on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Cal State San Bernardino.
