Golden Eagles Check In At No. 6 In New National Poll

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team has been ranked No. 6 in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll released by the organization on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles (5-0-1) are in the top-10 for a third straight week after a 1-1 tie at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park. Cal State LA had been ranked No. 2 in the nation for two weeks before the draw with the Toros in a non-conference match between California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals. Aidan Wait's first-half goal gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead, but Cal State Dominguez Hills tied it with a penalty kick goal late in the second half.

Cal State LA has outscored its opponents, 11-2, so far this season.

Defending national champion Franklin Pierce remains at No. 1 in the poll, while Chico State of the CCAA moved up to No. 2 following a 3-2 win over Stanislaus State. Franklin Pierce and Chico State are two of three teams in the nation that remain unbeaten and untied. Florida Tech, Midwestern State and Limestone University round out the top-five.

The No. 2 ranking was the highest for the Golden Eagles since they were ranked No. 1 on Sept. 22, 2022. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 2 twice in 2019, once on Oct. 15 and the other in the final poll of the season following their appearance in the NCAA Championship Game when they fell to Charleston, 2-0.

Cal State LA hadn't been ranked No. 2 since then until moving up to that spot a week ago. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 2 in the nation early in the 2010 season on Sept. 7 and spent the two weeks after that ranked No. 1.

Cal State LA wasn't ranked higher than No. 6 in 2021 before soaring to No. 1 in the final poll after winning the 2021 NCAA Championship. The Golden Eagles spent three weeks atop the poll in 2022, but fell out of the top spot on Sept. 27 and never got higher than No. 7 last season.

Cal State LA was ranked No. 13 in the 2023 preseason poll, jumped to No. 4 after the first week's results, moved up two more spots to No. 2 after shutout wins over Westmont and Biola, stayed at No. 2 after wins over Azusa Pacific and Point Loma and slipped to No. 6 after the draw with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Cal State LA has now earned a top-five spot in the national poll in four consecutive seasons and a top-10 spot in five straight seasons.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association is well-represented in the poll this week. Chico State is No. 2, Cal State LA is No. 6, Cal Poly Pomona is No. 13 and Cal State San Bernardino is No. 21.

Cal State LA is making an appearance in the national poll for the 18th consecutive season. That streak started in 2005.

The Golden Eagles have reached the top-18 in the national poll in 17 straight seasons, beginning in 2006, and have been in the top-10 in 14 of the past 16 seasons, a streak that began in 2007.

Cal State LA has achieved a top-five ranking for the eighth time in the past 15 seasons dating back to 2008.

Cal State LA will open CCAA play this week at home, hosting San Francisco State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
