SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team didn't get the finish it wanted on the final day of the Yotes Classic Showcase.
The No. 9 Golden Eagles, the defending West Region and California Collegiate came up short to Central Washington, the preseason favorites in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, falling in four sets, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18 in The Den. Cal State LA (1-3) also fell to the Wildcats at the 2022 Cal State LA Invitational before beating Central Washington in the NCAA West Region semifinals last November at Western Washington.
Iane Henke had 18 kills, 14 digs and three aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had 14 kills and
Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills and five set assists.
Kylie Thorne had 19 kills to lead Central Washington (1-2), while Ashley Kaufman had 13 kills.
Haley Roundtree had six blocks and three kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Eliza Cannon had 16 set assists and two blocks.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the opening set after a kill by Elliott, but the Wildcats responded by using a 9-1 run to take a 16-14 edge. Another kill by Elliott closed the gap to 16-15, but Central Washington surged again, using a 7-1 run to take a 23-16 advantage and ultimately closing out the opening set.
The Golden Eagles evened the match by taking a closely-contested second set. Cal State LA held a slim 20-19 lead before a kill by Elliott and a bad set pushed the lead to 22-19. Central Washington cut the margin to a single point three times, the final time at 24-23 before a kill by Cannon ended the set.
The third set was a disappointing one for the Golden Eagles, who held a 21-15 lead before seeing the Wildcats score five straight points to pull to within 21-20. A kill by
Shelby Grubbs stopped the run and a kill by Henke put the Golden Eagles ahead 23-21. Central Washington, though, then scored the final four points to capture the set.
Cal State LA also started well in the fourth set, jumping out to a 8-4 advantage before Central Washington rallied with a 6-0 run to take the lead. The Golden Eagles tied it twice at 10-10 and 11-11, but never could regain the lead. The Golden Eagles trailed by only two points, 20-18, but Central Washington scored the final five points to close out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in another high-powered tournament, the Colorado Premier Challenge with first-day matches against West Florida and Central Missouri.
