GOODYEAR, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's
Daniela Andrade made an absolutely smashing debut for the Golden Eagles at the 2023 RJGA Shootout at Estrella.
Andrade tied a program record with a final-round 69 to capture the individual championship on Tuesday and help the Golden Eagles to a third-place team finish and a new program 36-hole scoring record.
Andrade started the day tied for second, three shots behind first-round leader Isabelle Botero of MSU Denver. She erased that deficit, though, and took the lead for good with a birdie on the par-3 17th hole and maintained her edge with a par on the par-4 18th hole.
She had six birdies on the day and 10 during the two-day tournament.
Andrade's 36-hole total of 140 is a new program record and her 69 equals the 18-hole record set by
Morgan Sjoerdsma, also at this tournament, in 2021.
She also becomes only the second Cal State LA golfer in program history to win a tournament, joining Sjoerdsma, a two-time winner at the 2022 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and the 2023 Sonoma State Fall Invitational.
Cal State LA held the team lead heading into the final round and flirted with the lead for most the day before finishing in a tie for third. The Golden Eagles followed up their first round of 293 with a score of 297. Cal State East Bay had the low round of the day, 285, and captured the team title by four shots over Texas A&M International. Cal State LA was two shots further back in a tie with Arkansas-Fort Smith and Point Loma for third.
Cal State LA's 36-hole team score of 590 is also a new team record and marks the first time the Golden Eagles have finished below 600.
"What can I say about Dani? To win your first college tournament is a rare feat; I'm so happy for her," Cal State LA head coach
Hans Kersting said. "Our team had another solid day. To go out with the lead and put another solid round together is cool to see. This is a good team that is going to keep getting better."
Joshlyn Ayala was next for the Golden Eagles. She finished in a tie for 16th after shooting a round of 74 on Tuesday to finish at 3-over-par 147. She had four birdies on her round and seven for the tournament.
Sjoerdsma finished in a tie for 32nd after a round of 77 on Tuesday. She wound up at 7-over-par 151. The highlight of her round came with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole.
Harley Richardson finished in a tie for 36th after a round of 78 on Tuesday. She ended the tournament at 9-over-par 153. She had a pair of birdies on Tuesday.
Another newcomer,
Sarah Amaya, was one of the counting scorers on Tuesday after a round of 5-over-par 77. She tied for 46th overall at 11-over-par 155. She had a pair of birdies on Tuesday.
Cal State LA will return to action in October with a pair of tournaments in Hawaii beginning with the HPU Sharks Shootout hosted by Hawaii Pacific.
