Golden Eagles Drop A Tough One To Stanislaus State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team saw a late rally come up short in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles battled back from a 40-27 halftime deficit, but fell to the Warriors, 62-61, Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-4, 2-2 CCAA) had to settle for a weekend split for the second straight week, while Stanislaus State (8-4, 4-0 CCAA) remains undefeated in conference play.

Amaya Fuentes scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had 13 points and three assists. Donja Payne had 12 points and six rebounds.

Mya Blake had 18 points to lead the Warriors, while Liliana Marques had 16 points and six rebounds.

Alicia Jones had eight points, four rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot just 37.9 percent for the game and was 10-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 8-of-31 in the first half while falling behind by double-digit margins. Stanislaus State shot  37.5 percent (18-off-48) and was 10-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 16-of-23. Cal State LA had a 40-34 rebounding edge, while both teams committed 18 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles trailed by four points after one quarter and then trailed by as many as 18 points in the second period before cutting it to 40-27 at halftime after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh. 

Cal State LA cut the margin to 53-46 after three quarters and finally grabbed a 61-59 lead after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh with 1:27 left. Blake, though, countered with a 3-pointer of her own with one minute remaining and the Golden Eagles came up empty down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action with an exhibition game at Pepperdine on Dec. 29 before resuming conference play with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 30.
