LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team used an outstanding second-half performance to record an important home California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles scored 52 second-half points and erased a four-point halftime deficit in a 95-82 win over the Warriros in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-2, 3-1 CCAA) was 18-of-28 from the floor in the second half, including 8-off-15 from 3-point range.
Shane Bell had a sensational game, pouring in a game-high 29 points. He tied a program record with eight 3-pointers and accomplished it with only 10 attempts. The 29 points are a season high and mark the third time Bell has scored 20 or more points this season.
Deuce Walker had a season-high 15 points, while
Corey Cofield and
Dominic Escobar had 11 points each.
John Wade III had 25 points to lead the Warriors (4-6, 1-3 CCAA). Daniel Ameyaw had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles had impressive scoring depth in the win with
Eche Okeke,
Kris Krause and
A'Jahni Levias scoring eight points each.
Cal State LA shot 55.7 percent (34-of-61) and was 12-off-29 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 15-of-19 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) and was 9-of-30 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 22-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 39-21, but committed only 11 turnovers to 21 for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Bell launched the comeback. The Golden Eagles still trailed by nine points before a 3-pointer by Bell and a pair of free throws by Levias made it 47-43 at halftime.
A three-point play by Cofield gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half, 51-50, a 3-pointer by Bell kept the Golden Eagles ahead 54-53 and a jumper by Escobar, a 3-pointer by Bell and a stgeal and layup by Walker put the Golden Eagles ahead for good, 61-55.
A 3-pointer by
Justin Collins gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead, 71-59 and they led by as many as 15 points down the stretch.
Cal State LA will return to action in a non-conference game at Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
