Golden Eagles Are Championship Match Bound!!

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA -- Cal State LA's volleyball team continued a remarkable and inspiring postseason run that became historic on Friday.

The Golden Eagles once again turned in a near-flawless performance, this time knocking off No. 2 seed Missouri-St. Louis, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 in the first of two NCAA Championship semifinals at the UPMC Events Center on the campus of Robert Morris University. Cal State LA (23-10) has reached the national championship game for the first time in program history after bowing out in the semis in its first three trips to the Final Four. Cal State LA will face defending national champion West Texas A&M for the title on Saturday at 2 p.m. PST.

Cal State LA, the No. 6 seeds, have beaten national No. 3 Wayne State and No. 4 Missouri-St. Louis in its first two matches this week. The Golden Eagles entered the postseason un-ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top-25.

Emily Elliott was once again sensational, recording a match-high 19 kills, four service aces and four blocks for a total of 25 points in the three-set match. Iane Henke had 10 kills, one ace, 10 digs and five blocks, while Ashley Dittmann had 10 kills and five digs.

Lexie Rang led Missouri-St. Louis (34-2) with 17 kills and three blocks, while Delaney Humm had 11 kills.

Haley Roundtree had six kills and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Eliza Cannon had 39 set assists, two kills and four blocks.

Cal State LA had a 48-40 edge in kills, but the Golden Eagles' biggest edge came in the blocking department as the Golden Eagles had a 14-3 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA hit at an efficient .364 percentage while limiting the Tritons to a .212 percentage. Cal State LA also had a strong serving match, recording seven aces and six errors to two aces and two errors for Missouri-St. Louis.

Like they did in the quarterfinal win over Wayne State, the Golden Eagles rallied from a deficit to win the opening set. Cal State LA was down 17-14 and 19-17 before a 5-0 run behind the serving of Cannon that put the Golden Eagles ahead. A kill by Henke, a block by Shelby Grubbs and Henke, back-to-back kills from Elliott and another kill by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 22-19 lead. Missouri-St. Louis got to within 22-20, but a kill by Elliott and an ace by Henke got the Golden Eagles to set point and another kill by Elliott.

The Golden Eagles trailed 12-11 in the second set, but went on a 7-1 run to take control. Kills by Elliott and Henke, an attack error and an ace by Elliott put the Golden Eagles ahead, 15-12, and a kill by Dittmann, a block by Roundtree and Cannon and a solo block by Henke increased the lead to 18-13. Missouri-St. Louis closed to within 20-19, but kills by Elliott and Dittmann made it 22-19. Missouri-St. Louis closed to within 23-21, but a block by Roundtree and Elliott and an ace by Elliott ended the set and gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Also like they did on Thursday, the Golden Eagles were at their best in the final set. Cal State LA had 18 kills and just one hitting error to put the match away. A 6-1 run in the third set increased a 9-8 advantage to 13-8 and a kill by Elliott and a service ace by Elliott made it 15-8. The Golden Eagles were steady down the stretch and blocks by Henke and Grubbs, Elliott and Grubbs and a kill by Elliott pushed the lead to 20-13. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Dittmann sent the Golden Eagles to the championship match.
