Golden Eagles See Late Rally Come Up Short

SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a strong fourth-quarter rally come up just short Wednesday night at Point Loma.

The Golden Eagles sliced an 11-point deficit with four minutes to go down to three points before falling to the Sea Lions, 71-68, in a non-conference game in Golden Gymnasium. Cal State LA (4-3) was playing in second game in three nights in San Diego, where they battled San Diego State into overtime on Monday before falling, 76-71, in overtime.

Lily Buggs led the Golden Eagles (4-3) with 13 points, two assists and five steals, while Nicole Flennaugh had 12 points, six rebounds and two assists and Alicia Jones had 12 points and eight rebounds.

 Alyssa Munn had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Point Loma (4-4).

Neveah Asiasi had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while Amaya Fuentes had eight points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot just 35.8 percent for the game (24-of-67) and was 5-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-21 from the free-throw line. Point Loma (25-of-55) shot 45.5 percent for the game and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Sea Lions were 16-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Both teams had 39 rebounds and Cal State LA had 15 turnovers to 18 for Point Loma.

The Golden Eagles took a 16-14 lead after one quarter on a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and trailed by just three points at halftime, 36-33, after a late 3-pointer by Jones. 

A pair of free throws by Jones and a basket by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 39-35 lead in the third period, but the Sea Lions closed the period with a 17-4 run to take a 52-43 lead into the final quarter. 

A 3-pointer by Fuentes made it 54-50 with 8:42 to go, but the Sea Lions surged to a 67-56 lead with four minutes to go and held on down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday night with its home opener against Cal State Monterey Bay.
