LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's fabulous fall has put the Golden Eagles into the national top-10 in the final fall season standings of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup released on Thursday.
The Golden Eagles are a program-best eighth out of 155 NCAA Division II programs to earn points during the fall. Programs earn points based on their finishes in the NCAA Championships. Cal State LA had NCAA appearances from the men's and women's soccer teams and a first-ever national championship from volleyball and finished the fall with 223Â points.
The fall finish equals the best in program history. Cal State LA was No. 8 after the fall season in 2006-07 and also had a No. 9 finish in 2007-08. Cal State LA was No. 18 last year and No. 22 two years ago following the men's soccer team's national championship and a trip to the regional championship match in volleyball.
Cal State LA's women's volleyball led the way with its spectacular run to the national championship. The Golden Eagles were un-ranked in the final regular-season poll by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, but won the West Region title for a second straight year as the No. 4 seed with victories over No. 5 Seattle Pacific, No. 1 Chaminade and No. 2 San Bernardino while dropping only one set along the way. Then, as the No. 6 seed in the national championships, the Golden Eagles emerged victorious after a five-set win over No. 3 Wayne State, a three-set win over No. 2 Missouri-St. Louis and a four-set win over defending champion and No. 4 seed West Texas A&M. Emily Elliott was the Most Outstanding Player of the championships and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Iane Henke, Haley Roundtree and Eliza Cannon.
The Golden Eagles, the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season co-champions, earned 100 points for their finish.
Cal State LA's men's soccer team, which won the NCAA Division II Championship in 2021, made its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Championships and its 11th appearance in the past 12 years. The Golden Eagles won the CCAAÂ regular-season and tournament titles and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Super Region 4 playoff games for a fourth straight season. The Golden Eagles beat Point Loma, 1-0, in the second round and traveled to Midwestern State for the next two rounds. Cal State LA beat Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, to make it to the Super Region 4 championship match - the national quarterfinals - and bowed out in a cruel fashion on penalty kicks after a 3-3 tie with Colorado State-Pueblo. The Golden Eagles, by reaching the quarterfinals, earned 73 points.
Cal State LA's women's soccer teem, meanwhile, made its eighth NCAA appearance and its third in four seasons and the Golden Eagles advanced to the second round after a spectacular performance in penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie with Simon Fraser. Cal State LA goalkeeper Taesja Paopao made three saves and was perfect during a four-round session that the Golden Eagles took, 2-0. Cal State LA then fell to host Seattle Pacific in the second round, 1-0, to end the season. Cal State LA earned 50 points for the finish.
The volleyball and men's and women's soccer teams combined for a 51-13-12 record this fall. Volleyball was the No. 1-ranked team in the AVCA's final rankings, while men's soccer was No. 5 in the final poll by the United Soccer Coaches. Women's soccer, meanwhile, received votes and was just outside the top-25.
Cal State LA led the way among CCAA programs with Chico State (13th), Cal Poly Pomona (21st), Cal State San Bernardino (77th), Cal State Monterey Bay (91) also ranking in the top-100 after the fall season. Cal State San Marcos (T120) and San Francisco State (T120) also earned points in the fall.
Additional standings will be announced after the winter season, with the final results in June following the conclusion of the spring championship season.
