ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team responded to a disappointing conference opener with a bounce back California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles, two days after scoring only 43 points in a loss at San Marcos, started impressively and never looked back in a 78-60 win over the Seawolves in The Wolves Den. Cal State LA (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) finished its first conference road trip with a split, while handing Sonoma State (5-2, 1-1 CCAA) its first conference loss.
Lily Buggs led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Amaya Fuentes had 12 points and three rebounds and
Nicole Flennaugh had 11 points, four assists and three steals.
Sienna Cherwinski had 13 points for the Seawolves, while Madisyn Clark added 12 points.
Donja Payne had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Ashley Orozco and
Alicia Jones had eight points each.Â
Cal State LA led by as many as 10 points in the first half and extended a four-point halftime edge to 20 points after an outstanding third quarter.
The Golden Eagles shot 48.3 percent for the game (29-of-60) and made 7-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent in the first quarter (7-of-14) and 61 percent in the third quarter (11-of-18) in the third period, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
Jones and Fuentes accounted for the Golden Eagles' first 10 points and three Flennaugh free throws and a layup by Buggs gave Cal State LA an early 15-5 lead. Sonoma State, though, responded well and cut the margin to 20-16 after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 31-29 in the second quarter before a basket by Orozco, a free throw by Fuentes, a layup by Buggs and a free throw by
Gabriella Rones gave the Golden Eagles a 35-31 halftime lead.
Cal State LA then took control of the game with a 27-11 advantage in the third quarter. Flennaugh scored five straight points to open the period and 3-pointers by Rones and Fuentes helped the Golden Eagles to a 50-36 lead and Cal State LA got a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, a basket by
Iyanna Lamb and a layup by Payne to finish the quarter with a 62-42 lead.Â
Cal State LA maintained leads of at least 12 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with an exhibition game at San Diego State before resuming conferene play in its home opener on Thursday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
