SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team used an impressive defensive performance to post an exhibition win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
The Golden Eagles limited the Mustangs to only 11 baskets in a 59-44 victory Thursday night in the Motts Athletics Center. Cal State LA had three players score in double figures and the Golden Eagles limited Cal Poly to just 22.9 percent shooting, including 4-of-19 from 3-point range.
Dominic Escobar had 12 points to lead the Golden Eagles, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Jaden Lazo had 10 points, also with a pair of 3-pointers, while newcomer
Eche Okeke had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Justin Page had 10 points to lead Cal Poly.
Kris Krause had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Corey Cofield had seven points and
Shane Bell had six points.
Cal State LA shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) and was 9-of-25 from 3-point range. Cal Poly was 11-of-48 from the field, including just 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Cal Poly was 18-of-24. Cal Poly had a 44-36 rebounding edge, while the Golden Eagles committed 11 turnovers to 20 for the Mustangs.
Cal State LA fell into an early 10-2 hole, but tied the game at 10-10 after a 3-pointer by
A'Jahni Levias and took their first lead after a free throw by Corey Coffield.Â
The Golden Eagles still trailed, 21-17, before closing the half on a 13-0 run to take a 30-21 halftime lead. A 3-pointer by Escobar gave the Golden Eagles the lad, back-to-back steals by Lazo that resulted in layups and another 3-pointer by Escobar pushed the lead to nine at the break.
A pair of 3-pointers by
Kris Krause, a 3-pointer by Lazo and a free throw by Okeke gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 45-23 with 13 minutes to go. A 3-pointer by Bell matched that 22-point lead at 59-37 with 2:19 to go.
Cal State LA will open its 2023-24 season at Biola on Nov. 10 on the first day of the PacWest/CCAA Crossover Tournament.Â
