Golden Eagles Sweep Past Gators Into CCAA Finals

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put together a strong performance Friday to punch its ticket into Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship match.

The Golden Eagles, the tourney hosts in University Gym, swept past San Francisco State, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14 to earn its way into the tournament championship match for the second time in program history. Cal State LA (18-9) will face No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the title match.

Cal State LA, the CCAA regular-season co-champion, is trying to the win the tournament for the first time in program history. The only other time Cal State LA reached the championship was in 2019 when the Golden Eagles fell to Cal State San Bernardino in five sets in San Bernardino.

CCAA Player of the Year Emily Elliott had a match-high 18 kills for the Golden Eagles, who held determined challenges in the first two sets from No. 3 seed San Francisco State (18-10) before finally gaining some separation in the third and final set. Iane Henke had an 11-kill, 15-dig double-double.

Izzy Issak had eight kills and eight digs for the Gators and Tamiya Wilson had four kills, nine assists and eight digs.

Ashley Dittmann had eight kills and five digs for the Golden Eagles, while Haley Roundtree had five kills and seven blocks. Eliza Cannon had 36 set assists and seven digs.

Cal State LA had a 47-32 advantage in kills and an 11-3 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had seven service aces and eight errors, while the Gators had four aces and four errors.

The Golden Eagles battled through some adversity in the opening set and trailed 14-10 and 19-16 before turning things around with a 6-0 run that gave them the lead for good. Elliott started the run with a kill and it continued with a block  by Roundtree and Elliott, kills by Roundtree, Elliott and Dittman and ended with a bad set, giving the Golden Eagles a 22-19 lead.

The Gators pulled to within 23-22, but kills by Dittmann and Cannon ended the set.

The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 5-2 hole in the second set, but fought back and took a 17-13 advantage after kills by Roundtree and Elliott and an ace by Zuhal Cetin. The Gators got to within one point at 18-17 and again at 22-21, but the Golden Eagles got kills from Roundtree and Elliott and an ace by Henke to close out the set.

The Golden Eagles opened up a quick 6-2 lead in the final set, but the Gators battled back to tie it at 7-7. Cal State LA got a block from Roundtree and Elliott, an attack error and a kill by Henke to take a 10-7 lead and never looked back. Leading 18-14, Cal State LA scored the final seven points of the match on two kills by Elliott, a kill by Cannon, an ace by Elliott, a kill by Dittmann, another ace by Elliott and a kill by Elliott.
