Golden Eagles Complete A Successful Opening Trip

ELLENSBERG, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team turned in another outstanding performance Tuesday in the final game of a three-game trip to Washington.

The Golden Eagles (2-1) raced out to a 10-point lead after one quarter and never looked back in a 90-77 win over Central Washington in Nicholson Pavilion. Cal State LA posted wins over Central Washington and Seattle Pacific on the trip and fell in an overtime contest at Western Washington.

Cal State LA had five players score in double figures as the Golden Eagles executed brilliantly on offense. The Golden Eagles shot 57.4 percent for the game and made half of their six 3-point attempts. 

Ashley Orozco had a team-high 14 points for the Golden Eagles, while Nevaeh Asiasi, Alicia Jones and Gabriella Rones had 13 points each. Amaya Fuentes nearly had a double-double with a career-high 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Orozco's 14 points equaled a career high.

Asher Cai had a game-high 28 points for the Wildcats (3-3), while Valerie Huerta and Malia Smith had 17 points each.

Lily Buggs had eight points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had six points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists.and four steals.

Cal State LA was 39-of-68 for the game and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Central Washington shot 37 percent (27-of-73) and was 12-of-34 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were also 11-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 48-38 rebounding edge and committed 20 turnovers to 13 for Central Washington.

The Golden Eagles took control of the game early, jumping out to a 26-16 lead after one quarter and then building a 16-point twice, once at 45-29 after a layup by Buggs and again at 48-32 after a 3-pointer by Fuentes. Cal State LA settled for a 48-38 halftime lead.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game at 71-49 after a 10-0 run that began with a 3-pointer by Orozco and continued with layups by Donja Payne and Asiasi, a three-point play by Buggs and finished with a layup by Orozco.The Golden Eagles led 73-60.

Cal State LA led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter and completed an impressive road win.

Cal State LA will return to action next Tuesday at Azusa Pacific.
