LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team capped an impressive showing in the season-opening PacWest/CCAA Crossover Tournament with a win over Concordia.
The Golden Eagles took control of the game with a dynamic first half and went on to an 88-65 victory over Concordia Saturday at Biola's Chase Gym. Cal State LA (2-0) took a 54-29 halftime lead and won its second game in as many nights.
Corey Cofield led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds, while
Shane Bell and
Eche Okeke had 13 points each.
Luis Marin had 17 points to lead Concordia (1-1), while Jackson Tucker had 12.
The Golden Eagles displayed remarkable depth with six players scoring eight points or more.
Jaden Lazo had nine points, while
Dominic Escobar and
Kris Krause had eight points.
A'Jahni Levias had seven points and
Deuce Walker had six points.
Cal State LA shot 60 percent in the first half (21-of-35) and 51.6 percent for the game (32-of-62). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-18 from 3-point range and 18-of-21 from the free-throw line.Â
Concordia shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) and was 8-of-24 from 3-point range.Â
Cal State LA had a 34-25 rebounding edge and committed only nine turnovers to 18 for Concordia.
The Golden Eagles led by just two points, 19-17, before embarking on a game-breaking 28-2 run that gave them a 47-19 lead. Cal State LA went on to lead 54-29 by halftime.
Cal State LA led by as many as 31 points twice, the first time on a steal and jumper by Bell that made it 63-31 and the second time on a layup by
Robin Kniss that made it 88-57.
Cal State LA will play in another tournament next week at Central Washington.Â
