LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team turned in another stout defensive effort, but couldn't get the offense going in a hard-fought loss to Azusa Pacific on Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the game's only goal in the 40th minute and fell by a 1-0 count to the Cougars in University Stadium. Cal State LA (1-1) had a much showing in the second half, but was unable to break the shutout.
Bethany Tee scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute to account for the game's only score. Maddie Williams made six saves, all in the second half, for the Cougars (2-0-1).
Cal State LA played both its talented sophomore goalkeepers.
Olivia Spanish made her first start of the season and made one save, while
Areli Reyes, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves in the second half.
The Golden Eagles didn't manage a shot in the first half, but outshot the Cougars, 7-4, in the final 45 minutes. Azusa Pacific wound up with a 9-7 advantage for the game. The Cougars also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Liliana Gonzalez had two shots, both on target, while
Shelby Melin also had two shots, one of them on frame.
Heather Gomez and
Alice Hernandez also had shots on goal.
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday with a home game against Concordia at 7 p.m.
