Golden Eagles Fall In Four On Day 2 In Washington

BELLINGHAM, WA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team found the going a bit tougher on Day 2 of the Western Washington Invitational.

Only hours after battling to a five-set win over No. 20 Ferris State on Thursday night, the Golden Eagles were back at in the first match of the day on Friday morning and fell to Regis in four sets, 25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 25-17 in Carver Gym. Cal State LA (1-1) had hopes for a comeback after an impressive showing in the third set, but Regis (1-0) dashed those aspirations by jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth frame and closing out the match.

Emily Elliott had 12 kills, three service aces and six digs for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers had six kills and one ace. Iane Henke had five kills and a team-high 11 digs.

Amelia Davis had 15 kills for Regis, while Halle Theis added 10.

Eliza Cannon had 18 set assists and five digs for the Golden Eagles, while Shelby Grubbs had a team-high four blocks.

Regis enjoyed a 51-35 advantage in kills and a 7-5 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had six service aces and nine service errors, while Regis had seven aces and 17 service errors. Cal State LA hit at a .107 percentage, while Regis hit at a .261 clip.

The Golden Eagles fell into an early hole in the first set and fought an uphill battle the rest of the way. Regis jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never trailed. Cal State LA got to within 10-6 after an ace by Brooke Paige, but Regis scored the next three points to restore its advantage and led comfortably the rest of the set.

The Golden Eagles led early in the second set, 8-7, following a kill by Henke, but Regis scored the next three points and led the rest of the set. Cal State LA got to within 12-11, but Regis responded by winning the next three points and began to pull away.

The Golden Eagles extended the match with a strong performance in the third set. Cal State LA jumped out to an 8-4 lead and extended the advantage to 17-11 following back-to-back aces from Elliott and a block by Grubbs and Ashley Dittmann. Regis pulled to within 22-18, but an attack error, an ace by Landers and a ball-handling error gave the Golden Eagles the set.

Cal State LA, though, fell behind 6-1 to open the fourth set and couldn't recover. Elliott had another ace and Dittmann had a kill to get to within 7-5 and a kill by Henke kept it at 8-6. Regis, though, scored four of the next five points to grab a 12-7 lead and Cal State LA couldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a pair of matches to conclude the tourney, first against Simon Fraser at 9:30 a.m. and then against tournament host Western Washington at 7:30 p.m.
