SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team, the two-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament champions, will try to take another step toward a third straight title with a semifinal match against Sonoma State on Friday.

The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles will face the No. 6 seed Seawolves in the first of two semifinals Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Cal State San Bernardino's Premier Field. Cal State LA (13-1-3) earned a first-round bye, while the Seawolves ousted No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona via penalty kicks in the first round last Sunday. In the other semifinal, No. 1 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills will face No. 5 seed Chico State at 2 p.m.

The championship game will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner of the tournament earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

Cal State LA is making its 15th appearance in the conference tournament and its 11th straight. The Golden Eagles have reached the championship game in  (four consecutive seasons and have won tournament titles in three of the past four years (2021, 2018, 2017) and five times overall (2021, 2018, 2017, 2013, 2011).

Cal State LA will be facing Sonoma State for the fifth time in the tournament and has a 1-3 record in four previous meetings. The Seawolves won the first three meetings in 2007 (2-0), 2008 (2-1) and 2009 (1-0) before the Golden Eagles broke through for a 2-1 victory in 2013. Cal State LA won the tournament title that year with a 1-0 win over UC San Diego.

Sonoma State beat the Golden Eagles, 2-0, in the last meeting in a semifinal match in 2016 in Turlock.

The two teams will be meeting for the second time this season. Cal State LA won the first meeting, 3-0, in Los Angeles, after breaking a 0-0 halftime tie with second-half goals by Bryan Ortega, Carl Solli and Lucas Rosales. Alvaro Unanua made four saves for the shutout.

The Golden Eagles enter the conference tournament with a No. 2 ranking in the most recent NCAA Super Region 4 poll. Cal State LA is seeking its 10th NCAA appearance in the last 11 years and also looking to defend the program's first-ever national championship. Cal State LA is also the two-time defending Super Region 4 champions and could potentially host playoff games depending on the final seedings. The NCAA playoff field will be announced on Monday afternoon.
