Four Golden Eagles Earn Academic All-District Honors

LOS ANGELES -- Four members of Cal State LA's women's soccer team have been named to the 2022 CSC Academic All-District teams, selected by the district's College Sports Communicators, the organization announced last week.

Kaelah Basurto, Kimberly Gamez, Lauren Sanchez and Erin Schrock all earned Academic All-District honors for the Golden Eagles. Each has earned the award for the first time.

The awards honor student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program (formerly known as the CoSIDA Academic All-America program) recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

To be considered for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50% of the team's games at their position. No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and is at least a sophomore academically and athletically.

Basurto had an outstanding season for the Golden Eagles, appearing in all 21 matches for the Golden Eagles and playing a total of 896 minutes. She scored one goal and it was a big one, delivering the game-winning strike in a 1-0 CCAA Tournament semifinal win over Stanislaus State. She has excelled academically and has earned CCAA All-Academic and Fall Honor Roll recogntion. She graduated with a degree in English last spring and is currently pursuing a Master's degree at Cal State LA. She has a cumulative grade point average of 3.86.

Gamez was also a key member of Cal State LA's team and appeared in 19 of 21 games. She had a pair of assists and two points for the season as she assumed a bigger role on the team. A psychology major, she has also earned CCAA All-Academic and Fall Honor Roll recognition and carries a grade point average of 3.59.

Sanchez was a big part of the team in her final season with the program. She appeared in all 21 games with 17 starts. She had a pair of assists, including the helper on Melody Landphear's game-winning goal against Sonoma State in the championship game of the CCAA Tournament. She has earned CCAA All-Academic and Fall Honor Roll recognition and is majoring in communicative disorders. She has a cumulative grade point average of 3.69.

Schrock was a major contributor once again for the Golden Eagles, appearing in all 21 games and starting 18 times. She had two goals and one assist for five points. An outstanding student, she has earned CCAA All-Academic honors in each of her first two years at Cal State LA. She is a liberal studies major and carries a 3.92 grade point average.

The Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
