Golden Eagles Are Feeling Elite With Regional Title

BELLINGHAM, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put the finishing touches on a championship run through the NCAA Division II West Regional.

The Golden Eagles passed every test presented to them during the tournament, acing the final with a 29-27, 25-22, 25-14 win over PacWest champion Chaminade Saturday in the West Region championship match on the WECU Court in Carver Gym. Cal State LA (24-6) won its first West Region title since 2005 and the third in program history. The Golden Eagles, after dropping the second set in a four-set win over Sonoma State, won their final eight sets in the tourney, including a semifinal sweep over Central Washington and the sweep over the Silverswords on Saturday.

Emily Elliott, Iane Henke and Ashley Dittmann were all named to the West Regional All-Tournament team and all three played big roles in the championship match. Elliott had a match-high 16 kills and three aces and was a major force in all three matches. Henke had 10 kills, two aces and 13 digs in another outstanding showing and Dittmann had 11 kills, one ace, 16 digs and five blocks in a superb effort as well.

The Golden Eagles had a 44-38 edge in kills, outhit the Silverswords, .281 - .180 and had an 8-4 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles also had another outstanding night at the service line, collecting nine aces and keeping Chaminade from finding a rhythm offensively. Elliott had three aces, Jameson Sanders and Henke had two aces each and Dittmann and Jaden Grova had one ace. In addition, Tehya Chadwick had nine strong serve attempts with no errors and was a big part of a fantastic serving rotation.

Brooklyn Pe'a had 10 kills to lead Chaminade (26-8), which had its magical playoff run ended on Saturday. The Silverswords upset No. 1 seed Alaska Anchorage in their first-round match on Thursday and swept No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Friday to reach their first-ever regional title match.

Haley Roundtree had four blocks and four kills for the Golden Eagles and Jaden Grova and Eliza Cannon combined for 33 set assists, two kills and eight digs.

Cal State LA set the tone for the match with a gripping win in a titanic first-set battle. The Golden Eagles led for much of the opening set and appeared set for a drama-free decision after taking leads of 20-15 and 21-17. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21, but Chaminade scored the next four points to get to its own set point at 25-24. A block by Roundtree and Dittmann and a kill by Dittmann put the Golden Eagles up, 26-25 before Chaminade scored two straight to take a 27-26 lead. A service error tied it at 27-27 and a block by Cannon and Shelby Grubbs and a solo block by Dittmann following two strong serves from Elliott gave the opening set to the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles once again took late leads in the second set and had to overcome a spirited battle from the Silverswords. The Golden Eagles led 23-19 and got to set point at 24-20 after a kill by Dittmann. Chaminade saved two set points before a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles broke open the third set with an 8-1 run that extended a 10-8 advantage to 18-10. Two kills by Roundtree and a block by Dittmann and Roundtree accounted for the final three points of that stretch. A kill by Elliott, an ace by Elliott and a kill by Dittmann pushed the lead to 22-12 and a kill by Dittmann gave the Golden Eagles a 23-13 lead. After Chaminade earned its final point, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Henke and an attack error to end the match.

Cal State LA is making its 20th NCAA appearance overall and now has a winning overall record of 21-20. The Golden Eagles advance to the national quarterfinals, which will begin on Dec. 1 in Seattle as part of the Division II Fall Festival. The eight quarterfinalists will be reseeded on Monday after the remaining four regional champions are determined on Sunday.
