SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team, the California Collegiate Athletic Association champions, won't have a tournament title to add to its collection.
The Golden Eagles, the No. 1 seeds, fell to No. 5 seed Sonoma State in a five-set battle, 14-25, 25-16, 26-28, 25-20, 15-12 in The Sports Center at Cal State San Marcos. Cal State LA (21-6) took a 2-1 lead after a monumental win in the third set, but Sonoma State (21-7) responded by taking the fourth set and then taking a 13-8 lead in the fifth set and holding off a late Golden Eagles bid.
Emily Elliott had 18 kills and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Iane Henke had 11 kills, three service aces and 16 digs.Â
Jaden Krist had 18 kills for the Seawolves, while Kiana Richardson had 15 kills.
Jaden Grova had 23 set assists and three aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Jameson Sanders had 11 digs, six assists and three aces.
Sonoma State had a 59-48 advantage in kills and a 14-11 edge in blocks. Cal State LA hit at a .182 percentage to .231 for the Seawolves. Cal State LA had nine service aces - three each by Henke, Sanders and Grova - and nine service errors. Sonoma State had 13 aces and 19 service aces.
The Golden Eagles broke open the first with a 9-0 run that gave them a 19-10 lead. Grova had a pair of aces during a lengthy service run that ended after a block by
Haley Roundtree. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-13 after a kill by
Shelby Grubbs and ended the set on a kill by
Ashley Dittmann.
Cal State LA took a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, but Sonoma State went on a 10-1 run and never looked back while evening up the match.
The third set was the best of the match. Cal State LA took a 21-16 lead after a kill by Elliott and got to set point at 24-21 after a kill by
Ayjah Landers. Sonoma State, though, scored the next four points and got to set point at 25-24. A service error knotted it at 25-25 and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point. A kill by RIchardson tied it again at 26-26 before a kill by Elliott and a block by Dittmann and Grubbs gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Sonoma State, though, rallied to take the match. The fourth set was tied at 14-14 before the Seawolves scored three straight points and led the rest of the way.Â
Cal State LA took a 6-4 lead in the final set after kills by Dittmann and Elliott, but a 6-0 run gave the Seawolves a 10-6 advantage and the Golden Eagles were battling from behind the rest of the way. Sonoma State had a 13-8 lead before a kill by Henke, a block by Roundtree and Elliott and a solo block by Elliott sliced the deficit to 13-11. A service error got the Seawolves to match point and, after a kill by Elliott saved the first one, a kill by Richardson ended it.
Sonoma State advances to the tournament final, where the Seawolves will face No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona.Â
Cal State LA now awaits the annoucement of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday night.
