POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team placed three members from its 2021 Super Region 4 championship team on the 2021 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) All-America team, the D2 CCA announced on Wednesday.
Morten Bjoershol earned first-team All-America honors from the D2 CCA for a second straight season, while newcomer
Alvaro Unanua earned second-team honors and
David Elizaga earned third-team honors for a second straight season.
Bjoershol keeps adding to his impressive list of individual accolades. Already, he has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Defender of the Year, the West Region Player of the Year by the D2 CCA, first-team All-West Region by the D2 CCA and United Soccer Coaches with the United Soccer Coaches All-America team still to be announced. Bjoershol has spearheaded a defense that ranks third in the nation in goals against average (.595) and in a tie for fifth in the nation in shutouts with 11. He also leads the team with six goals scored, including four game-winners.
Unanua has been spectacular for the Golden Eagles in his first year with the program. He was named the CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this month and ranks among the nation's best. He leads the nation in saves percentage (.869), is second in shutouts (11) and fifth in goals against average (.595). Like Bjoershol, he has also earned first-team All-West Region honors from both the D2 CCA and the United Soccer Coaches. Unanua, who helped Charleston (W.V.) to the national title in 2019, earned his first All-America honor from the D2 CCA.
Elizaga earned his second All-America honors from the D2 CCA after also receiving third-team honors in 2019. Elizaga, Bjoershol and Alexander Brems are the only three players in program history to receive multiple All-America awards from the D2 CCA. Elizaga has been sensational for the Golden Eagles in 2021, particularly late in the year. He had the game-winning goal in the second half Saturday in Cal State LA's 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona that gave the Golden Eagles their second straight Super Region 4 championship and he set up
Gerard Hernando's overtime game-winner in the 2-1 win over Colorado Mesa in the third round. He made a steal in the Golden Eagles' half of the field, carried it down deep into Colorado Mesa's end before crossing it to
Carl Solli, who in turn flipped it over to Hernando for the golden goal.
He leads the team with four goals and 10 assists for 18 points and now has 33 career assists, which is No. 3 all-time in Cal State LA history.
Junior forward Rade Novakovich of University of Wisconsin-Parkside was named the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year. Novakovich leads the nation with 24 goals and 58 points as the Rangers posted a 15-4-2 record and qualified for the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
The Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award was named for long-time South Dakota State sports information director Ron Lenz in 2008. Lenz was
instrumental in the foundation of the D2 CCA All-America program, which honors outstanding student-athletes across eight NCAA Division II sports.
Young Harris College (Ga.) led all NCAA Division II teams with four All-America selections, while Cal State LA had three selections.Â
A total of 39 student-athletes from 29 institutions are represented on the three All-America Teams in 2021.
Sports Information Directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences sponsoring men's soccer selected the D2 CCA All-America Team. The process
begins at the regional level with all First Team All-Region picks advancing to the national ballot. This marks the 15th year that teams have been selected
since the All-America program began in 2006.
Cal State LA's three awards this year brings the Golden Eagles' total to 13. Cal State LA has had three players named in each of the past two seasons.
The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important
elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact
Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
