Bjoershol, Unanua Earn Coaches All-America Honors

KANSAS CITY, MO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team placed a pair of players on the 2021 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II All-America Team.

Defender Morten Bjoershol earned first-team All-America honors, while goalkeeper Alvaro Unanua received second-team honors. They were two of the 35 student-athletes to earn to men's soccer All-America honors from the United Soccer coaches.

The United Soccer Coaches' team was the second to be released on Wednesday, following the D2 CCA team selected by the nation's sports information directors. Cal State LA had three players earn honors on that team, Bjoershol (1st team), Unanua (2nd team) and David Elizaga (3rd team).

Typically, the United Soccer Coaches team is announced at the championship banquet, but the banquet is not being held this year. The team will be formally recognized at the All-America Ceremony & Reception on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022 at the Kansas City Convention Center in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention.

Bjoershol earned All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches for a third time in his outstanding Cal State LA career. He was the only three-time All-American for the men's soccer selection and joined Grand Valley State senior midfielder Cecilia Steinwascher as the only two players in all of Division II soccer (men and women) to earn a third All-America honor this season.

Bjoershol also became the first Cal State LA player in program history to become a three-time All-American.

This marks the third straight season Cal State LA has had a pair of players earn All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches. In 2019, Bjoershol and Alexander Brems were honored. In 2018, Bjoershol and Tim Klefisch earned All-America honors. Among the four national semifinalists, Charleston (W.V.) had four players honored, Cal State LA had two, and UIndy and Nova Southeastern had one each.
