LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team played an outstanding first quarter, but couldn't sustain its offense in a loss to Concordia Saturday in the final game of the CCAA/PacWest Crossover Tournament.
The Golden Eagles shot 52.9 percent in the opening quarter while racing out to a 22-15 lead, but they managed just 27 percent shooting over the final three periods in a hard-fought 63-56 defeat to the Eagles in University Gym. Cal State LA (0-2) played both of its PacWest opponents tough, but couldn't come up with a victory. Biola, which beat the Golden Eagles in overtime on Friday after erasing a late eight-point deficit in regulation, beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 72-69, in the early game on Saturday, to join Concordia with unbeaten performances in the tourney.
Lily Buggs had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Nicole Flennaugh added 14 points.
Jasmine Rachal had a game-high 23 points, while Micahaela VanderKlugt added 22 points for Concordia (2-0).
Alyssa Fisher had nine points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Jada Johnson had eight points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Cal State LA shot 33.8 percent for the game (22-of-65) and was just 5-of-18 from 3-point range (27.8 percent). Concordia shot 40.7 percent for the game (22-of-54) and was 8-of-19 from 3-point range (42.1 percent). Cal State LA was 7-of-11 from the free-throw line, while Concordia was 11-of-17. Cal State LA had a 40-39 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 18 for Concordia.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed their best stretch of the game in the first quarter when they went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-15 lead. Johnson scored with an assist from Fisher to start the run and Flennaugh added a layup with an assist from Buggs, Fisher hit a short jump and Buggs made a jumper in the lane to end the quarter.
 A 3-pointer by
Iyanna Lamb gave the Golden Eagles a 27-21 lead midway through the second quarter and an offensive rebound basket by Johnson helped the Golden Eagles take a 30-25 halftime lead.
Concordia, though, outscored the Golden Eagles, 23-14, to take a 48-44 lead into the final period.
A 3-pointer by Buggs and a steal and layup by Fisher pushed the Golden Eagles ahead, 49-48, with seven minutes to go and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 52-51 lead lead with six minutes to go. A pair of free throws by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles their final lead, 54-53, with 4:34 remaining.
Concordia scored the next six points to take over the contest. Buggs scored with an assist from Flennaugh to make it 59-56 with 31 seconds to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles could get in the final seconds.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a game at Azusa Pacific at 5:15 p.m.
