No. 10 Golden Eagles Fall To Toros In Overtime

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its unbeaten string come to a stunning end in overtime Wednesday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 10 in the national rankings released on Tuesday, surrendered the only goal of the game after a defensive miscue and fell to the Toros, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Toro Stadium. Cal State LA (5-2, 2-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in conference play, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-5-1, 1-2 CCAA) picked up its first conference win.

Cal State LA struggled all game trying to generate offense against a Cal State Dominguez Hills squad that packed the defensive zone. The Golden Eagles had trouble connecting on passes and the game turned into a defensive struggle with very few scoring chances on either side.

The Toros took advantage of a failed clearance in the 97th minute and Chrystal Dorado lifted a shot into the goal for the game-winner. The Toros had all four shots in the overtime, including a chance by Holly Kaemerle that sailed wide.

Cal State LA had a 4-2 advantage in shots in the second half, but none of the four were on frame. Cal State Dominguez Hills had an 11-7 edge in shots for the game.

Cal State LA's only shot on goal came in the first half when Adyson Willett headed a free kick from Nicolette Elliott, but Jessica Neighbors made the save for the Toros.

Jazmin Smith got free for a shot in the box with about 30 minutes left that went wide and Danya Gutierrez sent a shot wide from about 25 yards out with about 19 minutes to go. The Golden Eagles earned their only corner kick of the game with less than 15 minutes left and Yailene Lemus lifted a shot that went high.

Kaemerle had the best chance in regulation for the Toros in the 76th minute, but Cal State LA goalkeeper Amanda Leal was able to punch the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick that the Golden Eagles successfully defended.

Gutierrez had two of the Golden Eagles' seven shots. Leal had two saves.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Sonoma State at 11:30 a.m.
