HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put itself in position for a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road win, but didn't get the finish it needed.
The Golden Eagles had a nine-point lead with 2:12 to go, but surrendered the last 11 points of the game and fell to host Cal State East Bay, 53-51, Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (3-2, 1-2 CCAA) had a shot blocked, five straight turnovers and a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer in its final seven possessions.
Madison Adams and
Mackenzie Barnes had 11 points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Chiderah Uzowuru just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Rachael DiRegolo had eight points and two rebounds, while
Christine Delapina had eight points, four rebounds and five assists.
Cal State LA shot just 33.3 percent for the game (17-of-51), while Cal State East Bay (4-4, 1-2 CCAA) shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52). The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-12 from 3-point range, while the Pioneers were 4-of-17. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-18 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 13-of-20. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 38-37, and both teams had 22 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles led by four points, 14-10, at the end of the first quarter after back-to-back baskets from
Alyssa Fisher and Delapina, but were outscored, 22-10, in the second quarter and trailed 32-24 at halftime.
Cal State LA overcame that deficit with a big third-quarter effort. A 3-pointer by Adams gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half, 39-37, and a jumper by Delapina gave the Golden Eagles a 41-37 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 50-41 lead after a basket by DiRegolo with 2:26 left and Uzowuru hit one free throw with 2:12 left to give them a 51-42 lead. Cal State East Bay responded with a quick 3-pointer to start the Pioneers on their game-ending 11-0 run.
Cal State LA will return to action on Dec. 8 with a road game at Northwest Nazarene.
