Golden Eagles Hang On For Win In Season Opener

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a few anxious moments down the stretch, but held on for an impressive season-opening victory.

The Golden Eagles saw a 15-point lead sliced to a single point in the fourth quarter, but made the key plays late in a 60-53 win over Biola in a CCAA/PacWest Challenge tournament game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State LA held a 25-10 lead in the second quarter and never trailed after that, although Biola trimmed the margin to 46-45 with less than seven minutes remaining. The Golden Eagles responded with five straight points and held at least a one-possession lead the rest of the way.

Alyssa Fisher had a team-high 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Rachael DiRegolo had 14 points and nine rebounds and Chiderah Uzuwuru had nine points and six rebounds.

Christine Delapina had six points - all in the fourth quarter - for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 37 percent (20-of-54) and limited Biola to just 28.6 percent shooting (14-of-49). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-19 from 3-point range, while Biola was 11-of-26. The Golden Eagles were just 14-of-26 from the free-throw line, but had a big 48-38 rebounding edge, including 16 offensive rebounds.

After Biola got to within one point at 46-45 with less than seven minutes to go, DiRegolo scored and Delapina followed with a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 51-45. Biola pulled to within 51-48, but the Golden Eagles answered with a free throw by Adams and a 3-pointer by Delapina to boost the lead back to 55-48. Uzowuru added one free throw to make it 56-48 with 1:39 to go and hit two free throws in the final minute to all but put the game out of reach at 58-51. Fisher followed with two more free throws to account for Cal State LA's final points.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game against Concordia-Irvine.
