LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was hoping to complete a weekend sweep at home, but Chico State dashed those hopes.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never recovered in an 85-58 loss to the Wildcats in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Saturday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-12, 5-11 CCAA) never could find its rhythm against Chico State (14-5, 11-4 CCAA) and had trouble stopping the Wildcats' inside game.
Jihad Woods had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Devin Means had 11 points and five assists.
Isaiah Ellis had a game-high 26 points to lead the Wildcats, while Justin Briggs had 23 points and eight rebounds.
Kenneth Cyprian had seven points and three rebounds, while
Garrett Carter and
Khalil Williams had six points each.
Cal State LA shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) for the game and made 6-of-17 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles struggled at the free-throw line, hitting just 10-of-19. Chico State shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) and was 8-of-28 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 15-of-23 from the free-throw line. Chico State had a big 39-28 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to 13 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA fell into a quick 14-2 hole and never could find its footing. A 3-pointer by Carter sliced the deficit to nine points and, after Chico State built up leads as large as 15 points, a 3-pointer by Means made it 41-29 at halftime.
Chico State scored the first seven points of the second half and never led by less than 14 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
