NAMPA, IDAHO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up a much-needed victory Friday night in the D2 West Region Showcase at Northwest Nazarene.
After dropping a morning match to Hawaii Pacific, the Golden Eagles rebounded nicely and posted a 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20 victory over Dominican in the final match of the day. Cal State LA (3-4) improved to 1-2 in its first three matches of the tourney, which pits members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the PacWest Conference.
Karla Santos had 21 kills and 26 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron had 15 kills, 18 digs and three blocks.
Sifa Faaiu had 10 kills and
Daisia LaBrie chipped in with nine kills.
Kate Even had 14 kills to lead Dominican (1-6).
Nicole Effseaff had 47 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Cynthia Giron had 19 digs and
Jeshmarie Suarez had 18 digs. Victoria Duarte had a team-high five blocks.
Cal State LA had a 58-40 edge in kills and hit at a .175 percentage to .091 for Dominican. The Golden Eagles had a narrow 8-7.5 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 16-15 in the opening set before three consecutive Dominican errors and a kill by Santos gave them a 19-16 lead. Santos delivered a kill to get the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and ended the set with a kill that made it 25-22.
Cal State LA led early in the second set, 14-9, only to fall behind 18-17. Cal State LA scored five straight points on a Santos kill, an attack error, an ace from Efseaff, a kill by Faaiu and a kill from Santos to take a 22-18 lead. A block by Faaiu and Duarte got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and an ace by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a two-set advantage.
Cal State LA had a match point at 25-24 in the third set, but Dominican scored the final three points to force a fourth frame, The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 15-14, but an attack error and kills by Negron and LaBrie put the Golden Eagles ahead of good. A Santos kill made it 24-20 and a kill by Negron ended it.
Cal State LA lost the opening match of the day to Hawaii Pacific, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23. Negron had a team-high 13 kills. Effseaff had 21 set assists, while
Bailey Anderson had 11 set assists and two of the team's three service aces.
Cal State LA will conclude play in the tournament on Saturday with a match against Simon Fraser beginning at 4 p.m. PST.
