BURNABY, B.C. -- Cal State LA's scheduled game against defending national champion Western Washington on Wednesday has been cancelled due to poor air quality in Burnaby.
Due to fires in the region, air quality readings were unsafe leading up to the scheduled start time and with no signs of improvement, the game was cancelled.
It was a disappointing end to a frustrating trip for Cal State LA (1-1). The Golden Eagles only got in one game, a 2-1 loss in double overtime to host Simon Fraser on Monday. The game-deciding goal came on a penalty kick. Less than a minute before Simon Fraser was awarded the penalty kick, Cal State LA's
Ashli Villalobos was taken down in the box without a call.
Until the deciding final minute, the game was played on even terms. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute on a goal by
Victoria Arredondo with an assist to
Paulina Chaidez. Simon Fraser got the equalizer in the 72nd minute and that's how it stayed until the penalty kick.
Each team had 14 shots and Cal State LA had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Chaidez and
Tatiana Zuvic had four shots each, while
Adriana Maldonado had six saves.
Cal State LA was looking forward to matching up with Western Washington (2-0), which beat Grand Valley State for the national title last season and is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Fresno Pacific at 1 p.m.
