SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team made its first match in the season-opening Seaside Invitational at Point Loma a good one, but came up short later in the day.
The Golden Eagles roared back from sizeable deficits in the first two sets before completing a 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 win over Simon Fraser of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the morning, but never could get untracked in a 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 loss later in the day against Azusa Pacific.
Karla Santos led the way against Simon Fraser with 13 kills and three service aces, while
Matanofo Keil had seven kills and two blocks.
Daisia LaBrie had six kills, a .400 hitting percentage and one blocks.
Kirsten Pinkney had seven kills for Simon Fraser.
Cal State LA had a 37-23 advantage in kills and hit at a .209 percentage while holding Simon Fraser to a .087 clip. Simon Fraser had a 6-4 edge in blocks, while Cal State LA had a 7-3 advantage in service aces.
Senior
Kelsey Molnar had 29 set assists and seven digs.
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 10 digs and four assists.
Caitlyn Bato had a pair of service aces.
Daisy Crenshaw and
Alejandra Negron had five kills each.
The Golden Eagles started the match slowly and trailed, 8-2, before a kill by Crenshaw started a four-point run punctuated by an ace from Molnar that got them back in it. A kill and an ace by Negron and a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 14-12 lead before Simon Fraser regrouped to take a 19-17 lead. Cal State LA scored the next three points on Simon Fraser errors to take a 20-19 lead and a kill by Santos and block by Crenshaw and Keil boosted the lead to 22-19. The Golden Eagles got to set point after a kill by Santos and an ace by Santos ended it.
Cal State LA trailed 18-12 in the second set before rallying. A kill by LaBrie tied it at 19-19 and the Golden Eagles got back-to-back aces from Bato to take a 23-20 lead. Kills by Crenshaw and Keil ended the set.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead in the final set and ultimately closed out the match. A kill by Negron provided the Golden Eagles with match point.
In the later match against Azusa Pacific, Cal State LA enjoyed a 34-31 edge in kills, but also had 30 hitting errors to just 10 for the Cougars (2-0). The Golden Eagles were limited to an .035 hitting percentage to .247 for the Cougars.
Santos had a team-high 10 kills and six digs, while LaBrie and
Sifa Faaiu had seven kills each. Suarez had a team-high 10 digs, while Molnar had 29 set assists, five digs, two blocks and one service ace.
Cal State LA will be playing four big matches over two days. After facing Azusa Pacific later today, the Golden Eagles will face Alaska Anchorage on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and host Point Loma at 3:30 p.m.
