SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team battled hard Friday night in an exhibition game against NCAA Division I San Diego State.
The Golden Eagles held a 13-11 lead after one quarter in a game ultimately won by the Aztecs, 71-50. Cal State LA trailed by just seven points at halftime and by eight points with seven minutes to play before San Diego State pulled away down the stretch.
Mackenzie Barnes had a team-high 11 points and five rebounds for Cal State LA, while
Christine Delapina had 10 points.
Rikke Fabricius and
Alyssa Fisher had eight points each and
Rebeccah DiRegolo had five points and a team-high eight rebounds.
McKynzie Fort had a game-high 19 points for San Diego State and Te'a Adams had 15.
The Golden Eagles started well and a basket by DiRegolo and a 3-pointer by
Madison Adams gave Cal State LA a 5-2 lead. A 3-pointer by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 13-9 and Cal State LA settled for a 13-11 lead after one quarter.
Two free throws late in the first half by Delapina kept the Golden Eagles within 30-23 at halftime. The Golden Eagles fell behind by 10 points early in the third period, but clawed back to within five points at 38-33 after a 3-pointer by Adams. San Diego State took a 51-40 lead into the final period. A 3-pointer by Delapina made it 55-45 and a layup by Fisher made it 55-47, but that was as close as Cal State LA would get.
Cal State LA will open its 2017 season in a tournament at Central Washington beginning on Friday.
