AZUSA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team battled its way back to take a lead with four minutes left Friday night in its matchup against Point Loma, but the Golden Eagles came up short down the stretch.
The Golden Eagles were outscored, 11-0, over a late three-minute stretch and fell to the Sea Lions, 76-69, in the opening game of the Cougar Classic at Azusa Pacific. Cal State LA (3-3) trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before rallying and grabbing a one-point lead with 4:13 left. Point Loma (2-3) then blanked the Golden Eagles until the final minute of the game.
Jordan Wilson led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 18 points and five assists.
Devin Means had a season-high 16 points and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, while
DeSean Scott had 13 points.
Roderick Evans-Taylor had eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
Josh Rodriguez had a game-high 26 points for Point Loma. Zach Burnham had 17 points and nine rebounds and Tanner Lancona and Mike Planeta had 10 points each.
Cal State LA shot 36.4 percent from the field (24-of-66), while Point Loma shot 50 percent (25-of-50). The Golden Eagles were 10-of-27 from 3-point range, while the Sea Lions were 8-of-22. Cal State LA was just 11-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Point Loma was 18-of-29. Cal State LA was outrebounded, 46-31, but committed only 10 turnovers to 17 for Point Loma.
Means scored Cal State LA's first five points while staking the Golden Eagles to an early 5-3 lead and a layup by
Miles Ford gave Cal State LA its final lead of the first half at 11-10. The Golden Eagles trailed by 10 points, 27-17, before a jumper by Wilson and a three-point play by Evans-Taylor sliced the deficit in half. A 3-pointer by Wilson made it 33-30 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles fell behind by eight points, 55-47, but a 3-pointer by Means, two free throws by Scott and another by Wilson made it 55-53. The Sea Lions stretched the lead back to 62-55, but five straight points by Wilson and a layup by Ford tied it at 62-62 with five minutes remaining.
Geoffrey Frid then hit a pair of free throws with 4:13 remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 64-63 lead, but a 3-pointer by Planeta started the 11-0 run for Point Loma. That run finally ended when Scott made a layup with 58 seconds remaining to make it 74-66.
Cal State LA will conclude play in the Cougar Classic on Saturday with a game against the host Cougars at 7:30 p.m.
