ARCATA – Cal State LA's women's soccer team did enough Thursday to earn its way into the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from
Veronika Steen and settled for a 1-1 tie with Humboldt State on Thursday at College Creek Field. Cal State LA (6-7-3, 5-5-1 CCAA) snapped a five-match losing streak with the draw.
The Golden Eagles have 16 points, which is currently fifth among teams still battling for a spot in the tournament with one match remaining. Cal State LA is one point clear of Stanislaus State and two points ahead of San Francisco State and has beaten both of them earlier this year. Stanislaus State and San Francisco State play each other in the season finale on Saturday.
Cal State LA will earn either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed and open tournament play at either Cal State San Bernardino or Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday.
Cal State LA will be making its fourth straight tournament appearance and its seventh in the last eight years. The Golden Eagles won tournament titles in 2009 and 2014.
The Golden Eagles controlled the run of play for the most part on Thursday against Humboldt State (4-11-2, 2-7-2 CCAA). Cal State LA had a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles also got a chance to win the game in the second overtime, but Humboldt State goalkeeper Katelin Talbert made an outstanding save to stop a penalty kick by
Danielle Telles.
Talbert also made a big save in the first overtime of a shot by
Anahie Duran to keep her team in it.
The Golden Eagles got the first goal of the game in the 36
th minute on a goal by Steen. She beat the goalkeeper off her line with a chip from about 25 yards out for her first goal of the season.
The 'Jacks tied it, though, in the 42
nd minute on a goal by Rose Harman when a cross into the box deflected in off a defender.
That was it for the scoring in the contest, although each team had chances in the extra time. Duran hit a blistering shot after a foul just outside the box that Talbert was able to deflect over the crossbar. Humboldt State had a bid by Samantha Morris, who was able to get to a ball before Cal State LA goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado and sent a ball toward the goal that wound up going just wide. Maldonado then made a strong save on a shot by Jensen Smith in the final minute of the first overtime.
The Golden Eagles then pushed the attack in the second overtime period while Humboldt State tried to hold on. The 'Jacks committed five fouls and drew three yellow cards in the final 10 minutes, including one in the box that resulted in a penalty kick.
Maldonado wound up with three saves for the Golden Eagles. Duran had a match-high five shots.
Cal State LA will conclude its regular season on Saturday with a road game against Sonoma State at 11:30 a.m. Due to rainy conditions, the match will be played at Santa Rosa Junior College.
