Golden Eagles Race To Big Win In Home Opener

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team used an entertaining offense to record a big victory in its home opener.
 
The Golden Eagles scored at least 20 points in each quarter and raced to an 88-66 victory over Concordia Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (1-1) was able to avenge a 72-68 loss to the Eagles last year.
 
Cal State LA jumped out to a 24-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back while posting its first win of the season. The Golden Eagles led 45-26 at halftime and 68-46 after three quarters.
 
Cal State LA shot 47.7 percent for the game (31-of-65) and knocked down half of its 24 attempts from 3-point range. Concordia (0-3) shot just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) and was just 6-of-22 from 3-point range. Concordia was 20-of-32 from the free-throw line, while Cal State LA was 14-of-20.
 
Concordia had a 41-40 rebounding edge and Cal State LA forced 20 turnovers while committing 15.
 
Franeka Hall led the Golden Eagles in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points. She also had five assists. Chiara DiMarco had 16 points and also had five assists.
 
Ashley Earles had 16 points to lead Concordia, while Brittany Stafford had 12 points.
 
Samantha Lee had nine points, all coming on three 3-pointers, Bree Parsons had nine points and five rebounds and Sami Oliver had nine points, also on three 3-pointers. Christine Delapina had eight points, four rebounds and four assists and Geena Greene had eight points and five rebounds.
 
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game on two baskets by Knox and one by DiMarco and never trailed. Concordia pulled to within 6-5 after a 3-pointer by Gaby Johnson, but the Golden Eagles went on an 18-1 run to close the quarter. Cal State LA scored the last 13 points of the quarter, including a 3-pointer by Delapina.
 
Concordia closed to within 31-20 in the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles went on a 14-6 run to close out the half with a 45-26 halftime lead.
 
Cal State LA built leads as large as 27 points in the third quarter and took its biggest lead at 80-49 after a layup by Greene off an assist by Kaija Powell.
 
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Simon Fraser on Monday at 7 p.m.
