Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles See Title Reign End In Pomona

POMONA – Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw its NCAA Division II West Region title reign come to an end in a hard-fought battle in Pomona.

The Golden Eagles gave up the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute and fell to the Broncos, 1-0, Saturday night at Kellogg Field. No. 5 seed Cal State LA (12-5-3), which was making its fifth straight appearance in the regional semi-finals after winning regional championships in 2011 and 2014, lost to No. 1 seed Cal Poly Pomona (14-2-3) for the third straight time this season. All three games were decided by one goal and all three were held in Pomona.

The Golden Eagles, with a makeshift lineup, battled on even terms throughout the contest, but never could get the equalizer. Cal Poly Pomona had a 14-12 advantage in shots, but only three of those shots were on goal. Cal State LA goalkeeper Anthony Perez, who was sensational while leading the Golden Eagles to a penalty kick advancement in Thursday's first round against Stanislaus State, made two saves on Saturday.

Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Fernando Pablo Quevado made four saves for the Broncos.

Cal State LA had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA's defense was superb for most of the night. The Golden Eagles held the conference's Offensive Player of the Year Christian Gonzalez Diaz without a shot on Saturday and did the same to Alexander Turkson, who scored two goals in the Broncos' 3-2 double overtime win over the Golden Eagles last week.

Instead, Cal Poly Pomona got the bulk of its shots from Sergi Monso and Mathew Perez, who combined for 10 of the team's 14 attempts. Perez got the game's only goal when he stole the ball in the box and knocked a shot home midway through the first half.

Cal State LA got three shots from Steven Eberle, including a solid chance in the 40th minute that was stopped by Quevedo.

Brett Elliott, Marvin Iskra and Herbert Biste got two shots each.
